With their boundless amounts of energy that can drive many parents up the wall during the six-week summer break, encouraging children to embark on some outdoor activities may prove to be a wise move this summer. If you are unsure as to where to head so that your children can participate in some healthy and stimulating activities in the fresh air, take a look at the following 10 outdoor activities for children under 8 years old.
1- Serious Outdoor Skills, Devon
Explore and discover the natural world with your children by embarking on a great wilderness family camping adventure. From fire and shelter, tracking, nature awareness and cooking on an open fire, the Serious Outdoor Skills will help your child recognise and appreciate more primitive ways of living in the most stimulating of surroundings.
2- Jack Raven Bushcraft, Kent
Encourage young children to learn tribal skills such as collecting fuel and preparing open fires at Jack Raven Bushcraft in Staffordshire. The experience of living in the woods whilst learning about bushcraft skills led by a friendly and informative team is a great UK outdoor activity for children.

6- Bewilderwood Adventure Park, Norfolk
This forest of family fun is owned by the celebrated children’s author, Tom Blofeld and hosts many activities including zip wires, jungle bridges, tree houses, boat trips plus Twiggles, Boggles and Crocklebogs - a fantastic outdoor experience for children of all ages.
7- Go Ape
Go Ape is one of the UK’s leading outdoor adventure playgrounds set within the trees and with 29 Go Ape Tree Top Adventures scattered around Britain, it won’t be too difficult to find one nearby. Whilst trail blazing, canopy exploring and swinging from trees like apes aren’t suitable for very young children, six, seven and eight year olds will experience the adventure of a lifetime.
8- York Ghost Walk, Jorvik Viking Centre
There is nothing quite as enthralling for children than stories about ghosts, ghouls and monsters. Stimulate your child’s imagination by taking your little ones on a 75-minute York Ghost Walk starting from the Jorvik Viking Centre in York, where they can visit all the haunted sites of this great city.
9- Studford Trails, North Yorkshire
Aimed specifically at primary and pre-schoolers, let Rabbit, Mole and Owl show your little ones the many delights, hidden treasures and wildlife wonders of the Studfold Trail. Based at Studfold Farm, Nidderdale.
10- Tarka Trail, Devon
If you are lucky enough to be heading to North Devon this summer with young children in tow, then be sure to head to the Tarka Trail, a 30-mile trail in North Devon. This predominantly flat trail is a great place for a family bike ride.
Of course, with all outdoor activities safety should never go overlooked, particularly when cycling, and all children (and adults for that matter), should wear a high quality helmet.
